BELLINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL

Accountability

Ashley Ask (Bellingham)

Senior Ashley Ask is a great example for her teammates on our Bellingham High Tennis Team. Whether ahead or behind, Ashley plays with great determination and grit. She never takes points “off”, but attacks each point with energy, skill, and intelligence. She is also very accountable, as she shows up on time, ready to play, every day, and communicates early with the coaching staff if any potential conflicts might arise with her schedule. Ashley is much appreciated by all!

Steve Chronister, BHS Head Tennis Coach

Ashley has been a great multi-sport athlete at BHS.  She’s a great teammate and leader for us both on the hardwood and tennis courts.  We appreciate her coachability and great attitude!

Chad Larsen, BHS Athletic Coordinator

Grit

Shay Campbell (Bellingham)

Shay Campbell has exhibited an extraordinary amount of determination and work ethic as he recovered from a golf season ending knee injury last year. He came back with a better game, a great attitude, and the desire to be the best he can be. Despite a slow start to the season, not scoring as well as he wanted, it all paid off on a rainy day on April 1 at Avalon Golf Links.  He carded a 3 over par 75, finishing second in the 8 team tournament.

Shay shows up every day, rain or shine, and puts the time in to become excellent. He has earned the respect of his teammates and his professionalism and work ethic have been contagious.

Scott Smartt -Head Golf Coach

We appreciate and recognize Shay Campbell for being an outstanding student-athlete and teammate.  We are excited to watch him represent BHS on the links this season and in the years to come!

Anacortes Athletics

Persons of Distinction – Jourden Lamar

Athletic Trainer, Anacortes High School

In the world of high school sports, the athletic training room is often seen as a place for recovery and rehabilitation. However, at Anacortes High School, Jourden Lamar has transformed it into something much more: the heart of the athletic department.

Since joining the Seahawks, Jourden has become a cornerstone of our championship culture. While his expertise in student-athlete care and treatment is exceptional, it is his dedication to the “person” behind the “player” that truly sets him apart.

A Culture of Connection

Walk into the training room on any given afternoon, and you’ll find it buzzing with energy. Most students aren’t there for a literal ice pack or a wrap; they are there because Jourden has cultivated an inviting, inclusive, and protective environment. He has a rare gift for making every student feel seen and supported, ensuring that his office is a safe harbor for all.

Above and Beyond the Sidelines

Jourden’s impact is felt far beyond the tape and the turf. His commitment to the program is tireless:

  • Constant Presence: He is a fixture at every home event, proactively checking in with coaches and athletes.

  • Professional Excellence: He maintains seamless communication with the School Nurse and Athletic Director, ensuring a holistic approach to student wellness.

  • Selfless Service: Whether it’s staying late for a rainy mid-week game, working weekends, or traveling with teams to major events, Jourden goes wherever he is needed most.

The Heart of the Seahawks

Kind, thoughtful, and fiercely dedicated, Jourden Lamar is more than just an athletic trainer—he is a mentor and a critical leader on our campus. We are proud to recognize him as a Person of Distinction for his unwavering commitment to the health, safety, and spirit of Anacortes Athletics.

Sedro-Woolley Athletics

Persons of Distinction – Galen Kindred

Sedro-Woolley Athletics mourns the loss of longtime Cubs supporter Galen Kindred, a devoted member of the community whose presence was felt at countless events for decades.

Galen faithfully served behind the scenes at Cub athletics, keeping the scorebook at basketball games for more than 25 years while partnering with Don Wood on the clock, and working football games in the booth alongside Darrell Hiesler. Known for his mischievous grin, positivity, and relentless support of the Cubs, Galen built lasting friendships across the program.

A proud Husky fan, golfer, realtor, and friend to many, Galen embodied what it means to serve your community school. He will be deeply missed by the Sedro-Woolley family.

Testimonials

Galen and I were friends for over forty years. We went to the state basketball tournament for over 25 years. We went to numerous King Bowls at the Kingdome. We were partners at the Sedro Woolley basketball games for the past 25 years. Galen did the book and I done the score clock. We also worked the Sedro Woolley football games up in the booth with Darrell Heisler. He loved my wife’s apple pie. He was a great friend.
Don Wood
SWHS Event Worker/Community Supporter

“When I arrived 8 years ago, Galen was a friendly face that gave me encouragement, historically context and his own thoughts about the basketball program when I started coaching the varsity boys team.  He was our scorekeeper and we became good friends as we had common interest in CUBS athletics, Washington Huskies and Golf.  No matter how things were going, he always had a knack for being positive, a great smile or joke and relentless support of the CUBS.  Galen was an example of what service to your community school and athletics is all about.  He was one of one and will be missed.”
Chris Spencer
SWHS Assistant Principal

“A mischievous grin; this is how I will remember Galen Kindred.  For years we shared the press box (crow’s nest) during football games and the scoretable during basketball seasons.  Good conversations, amazing snacks, once in a lifetime spectator experiences, and laughter…lots of mischievous grins.  Well done Galen.”
Nita Hodgins
SWHS ASB Secretary

“I got to know Galen immediately when I started at Woolley, and it was clear to me that he cared deeply about the Sedro-Woolley community and was a fierce advocate for our kids coming up in the district. He was a constant help at events and always made the experience enjoyable for everyone around him. Galen was a living testament to making the world around you a better place and showing our youth that they have support outside of their household. The Cubs have lost an amazing person and I feel grateful to have gotten to know and learn from him.”

He leads by example in all that he does and is, quite simply, an exceptional human being.
Windy Hindman
SWHS Teacher/Coach

Jordan is an extremely hard worker and shows up everyday ready to improve. He is dedicated, hardworking, and consistently applies our coaching, which allows him to improve every time he steps on the mat. One of the main goals of our program is to produce great young men that will be successful well beyond wrestling. Jordan exemplifies that in everything he does. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to coach Jordan, and there is no doubt that he will continue to be successful in whatever comes next.
Jeff Bajema

Eric Tripp – District 1 AD of the Year!

Every year, Athletic Directors around the state honor their colleagues for their service, work-ethic and professionalism. League athletic directors are recognized and chosen as AD of the year.  Those nominations are brought before WIAA district boards around the state to determine who among the finest will be honored at the district level, and ultimately represent their district (6 Districts in Total) at the WSSAAA State Conference.  It is at the state conference where athletic directors annually celebrate the accomplishments of these outstanding district athletic directors.
The Northwest Conference could not be more happy to inform you that Eric Tripp was voted in by the Northwest Conference as our representative and then voted in again by the District 1 to represent us all. Eric will now be one of six Athletic Directors in the state being celebrated. He is now in contention for becoming Athletic Director of the Year in the state of Washington. This will take place at the WSSAAA conference this spring (April 25-28 – @ Three Rivers Convention Center, Kennewick, WA).

AD Testimonial

Today I am officially nominating Eric Tripp for the Athletic Director of the Year for the Northwest Conference. I personally have known Eric for about 8 years. As a coach I was able to watch him operate and as a colleague I have been able to work with him for the last 4 ½ years. It is incredible to see how Eric balances the role of assistant principal and Athletic Director. He is always trying to help advance athletics in the Ferndale Community, and has been an integral part in unveiling the new stadium at the high school. I always enjoy being around people that grind, work hard and make people around them feel supported. It is clear to me that Mr. Tripp does that better than almost anyone I have encountered.

Eric goes above and beyond by building strong relationships with coaches, families, and community partners while always putting students first. It is evident that he anticipates challenges before they arise and finds solutions that strengthen programs long term. Beyond game management, I constantly witness Eric advocate for equity, safety, and opportunity across all activities. His leadership sets the tone for a positive, character-driven culture throughout the Ferndale School District.

Tripp’s assistant Katie Kruckeberg had some very nice things to say about Eric, “Gosh just that he’s been here since 2016, I’ve been with him since fall of 2017. He loves the students’ athletes and always strives to get them to do their best. He is devoted to Ferndale athletics and a great boss that always lets me give my two cents. I wouldn’t work for anyone else!”

Tripp brings more than 24 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. Most recently, he spent eight years at Humboldt University as the offensive coordinator and assistant head football coach. Prior to that, he served 14 years at Western Washington University as the assistant head football coach and head strength coach. Tripp has also worked as a physical education teacher and athletic director. Notably, he began his career at Ferndale High School as an assistant football coach while completing his student teaching under Vic Randall.

Northwest Conference Coaches Recognized by Seahawks

adsf

Several Northwest Conference (NWC) football coaches were recently honored as Seattle Seahawks High School Coaches of the Week, a recognition that highlights excellence in leadership, character, and commitment to student-athletes. The honored coaches include Ron Lepper (Mount Baker), Jamie Plenkovich (Ferndale), Dalton Schwetz (Burlington-Edison), and Nick Lucey (Squalicum)—each representing the strong football tradition and values of the NWC.

These coaches are known not only for success on Friday nights, but for their daily work mentoring student-athletes in the classroom, weight room, and community. Through accountability, discipline, and teamwork, they emphasize personal growth alongside athletic development, helping players build habits that extend well beyond the game.

Their recognition reflects the core foundations of athletic competition in the Northwest Conference: sportsmanship, integrity, respect, and competitive excellence. By prioritizing the holistic development of student-athletes, Lepper, Plenkovich, Schwetz, and Lucey exemplify what high school football—and the NWC—stands for.

LYNDEN HIGH SCHOOL

Courage

Madelyn Honcoop (Lynden)

This year, Madelyn Honcoop has shown tremendous courage in joining the swim team for the first time as a junior. Stepping into a brand-new sport takes bravery, especially on a team that’s still growing in recognition, but Madelyn didn’t let that hold her back. From the start, she brought determination, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn that quickly set her apart. In just one season, she has become one of our top freestyle sprinters and a valued member of the team. We’re so excited to see where her high school swimming journey takes her next!

Positive Attitude

Luke Van Berkum (Lynden)

Luke Van Berkum is the gold standard for positive attitude on Lynden’s Cross Country team. Despite distance running being one of the most painful and mentally taxing sports to compete in, Luke consistently shows up with a smile and a quick-witted joke to lighten the mood. When Luke is around, the mile cut downs become a little easier and what seemed daunting and impossible before suddenly seems a little more possible. His hard work and positive attitude inspire his teammates and we couldn’t be more proud to call him a Lynden Lion.
