Cubs Athletics Person of Distinction – Galen Kindred

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE – PERSON OF DISTINCTION AWARD

The Northwest Conference puts high value on celebrating our students, programs and communities throughout the school year.  From “Leaders in Sportsmanship,” to “Coaches vs. Cancer” and “Only 7 Seconds,” The Northwest Conference consistently goes above and beyond with outreach to every school and their corresponding communities.

Each school in the NWC will have the opportunity to highlight someone from their community as a “Person of Distinction.” This honor will celebrate someone associated with each athletic program and draw a spotlight on the amazing selfless people who help make this conference so special!

Sedro-Woolley Athletics

Persons of Distinction – Galen Kindred

Sedro-Woolley Athletics mourns the loss of longtime Cubs supporter Galen Kindred, a devoted member of the community whose presence was felt at countless events for decades.

Galen faithfully served behind the scenes at Cub athletics, keeping the scorebook at basketball games for more than 25 years while partnering with Don Wood on the clock, and working football games in the booth alongside Darrell Hiesler. Known for his mischievous grin, positivity, and relentless support of the Cubs, Galen built lasting friendships across the program.

A proud Husky fan, golfer, realtor, and friend to many, Galen embodied what it means to serve your community school. He will be deeply missed by the Sedro-Woolley family.

Testimonials

Galen and I were friends for over forty years. We went to the state basketball tournament for over 25 years. We went to numerous King Bowls at the Kingdome. We were partners at the Sedro Woolley basketball games for the past 25 years. Galen did the book and I done the score clock. We also worked the Sedro Woolley football games up in the booth with Darrell Heisler. He loved my wife’s apple pie. He was a great friend.

SWHS Event Worker/Community Supporter

“When I arrived 8 years ago, Galen was a friendly face that gave me encouragement, historically context and his own thoughts about the basketball program when I started coaching the varsity boys team.  He was our scorekeeper and we became good friends as we had common interest in CUBS athletics, Washington Huskies and Golf.  No matter how things were going, he always had a knack for being positive, a great smile or joke and relentless support of the CUBS.  Galen was an example of what service to your community school and athletics is all about.  He was one of one and will be missed.”

SWHS Assistant Principal

“A mischievous grin; this is how I will remember Galen Kindred.  For years we shared the press box (crow’s nest) during football games and the scoretable during basketball seasons.  Good conversations, amazing snacks, once in a lifetime spectator experiences, and laughter…lots of mischievous grins.  Well done Galen.”

“I got to know Galen immediately when I started at Woolley, and it was clear to me that he cared deeply about the Sedro-Woolley community and was a fierce advocate for our kids coming up in the district. He was a constant help at events and always made the experience enjoyable for everyone around him. Galen was a living testament to making the world around you a better place and showing our youth that they have support outside of their household. The Cubs have lost an amazing person and I feel grateful to have gotten to know and learn from him.”
